| Huancor is hard to reach and hard to find. It is located east of Chincha and can be reached by following a dirt road that is very narrow in places and by crossing a high mountain pass. Although the dirt track touches the edge of the site, it is rather difficult to recognise. The majority of the petroglyphs are on outcrop rock, although there are many decorated boulders. Some parts of the site are very steep. In 2006 we noticed traces of vandalism that were not there in 2004. Please respect this important site !
The first photo shows the view from the site, looking east across the valley. The second photo shows the outcrop with the major concentration of petroglyphs, of which many panels feature small and large cupules combined with figurative art; an exception at Peruvian petroglyph sites. The third photo shows a bird-like petroglyph, a cross-shaped figure and a cross-in-cross figure similar to examples from Yonan and Cerro Mulato. RESPONSIBLE VISTOR BEHAVIOUR AT ROCK ART SITES * Never touch or wet rock art - it is highly damaging, especially to rock paintings * NEVER chalk or enhance petroglyphs * Do not walk on engraved rock * Leave all archaeological artefacts as they are * Only take photographs, only leave your footsteps |
